Downtown Monroe is a unique Southern Wisconsin destination for those with a variety of interests. The city's historic courthouse is a major attraction in its own right, drawing visitors with an appreciation for architecture and history from around the world. Monroe's famous Limburger Rebellion was fought on the steps of this historic building, paving the way to Green County's long-term success and notoriety in the cheese-making industry. Every two years, the square serves as a stage for the world-famous Cheese Days Celebration that pays homage to the area's long-standing cheese making tradition.
The square and side-streets of downtown offer visitors a vibrant shopping district filled with eclectic shops, restaurants, bars and other attractions. The Monroe Chamber of Commerce is a short walk from downtown and you can find the offices of Green County Tourism in the courthouse building itself.
Streets around the square are often used to stage community events such as the Monroe Farmer's Market, the bi-annual Cheesedays Celebration, the annual Chili Cookoff and a variety of parades and other community activities.
